Cornhill Castle

Cornhill Castle Wedding Guide

If you're searching for a wedding venue that combines breathtaking views, elegant interiors and one of the most impressive castle settings in Scotland, it's easy to see why Cornhill Castle continues to capture the hearts of so many couples.

Nestled in the South Lanarkshire countryside near Biggar, Cornhill Castle is one of those venues that feels grand without ever feeling intimidating. From the moment you drive through the gates and make your way up the sweeping driveway, you get the sense that you've arrived somewhere truly special.

I've had the pleasure of photographing several weddings here over the years, and every visit reminds me why it's become one of my favourite venues to work at. Whether it's the incredible sunsets across the surrounding fields, the elegant interiors or the way the staff make every wedding feel effortless, Cornhill Castle consistently delivers unforgettable wedding days.

A Beautiful New Look

Cornhill Castle has recently undergone a stunning refurbishment, and I honestly think the venue has never looked better.

The updates have been carried out beautifully, modernising the venue while keeping all of the charm and elegance that couples fall in love with in the first place.

One of the biggest additions is the beautiful new outdoor ceremony greenhouse, giving couples another incredible option for saying "I do" while surrounded by the castle grounds.

The introduction of the new bandstand has also transformed the gardens, creating another elegant focal point for ceremonies and photographs. While some couples may fondly remember the original fountain, I think the new layout blends wonderfully with the rest of the venue and offers a fresh, timeless feel that suits modern weddings perfectly.

Inside, the refurbishment has continued throughout many of the rooms, creating bright, luxurious spaces that photograph beautifully in every season.

Getting Ready at Cornhill Castle

One of the things I always enjoy about Cornhill Castle is how elegant the preparation rooms are.

They're spacious, beautifully decorated and filled with natural light—everything you could ask for when getting ready on one of the biggest mornings of your life.

As a photographer, natural window light is priceless.

It creates soft, flattering photographs during hair and makeup, while also allowing me to capture beautiful bridal portraits before the ceremony without needing lots of artificial lighting.

Those quiet moments with family and friends before the day begins often become some of the most treasured photographs in the final gallery.

Endless Photography Opportunities

This is where Cornhill Castle really shines.

There are very few venues that offer such a huge variety of backdrops without ever needing to leave the grounds.

The grand castle itself provides a dramatic backdrop for portraits, while the sweeping driveway creates a wonderful sense of arrival that's perfect for wide-angle photographs.

The helipad offers panoramic views across the surrounding countryside, making it one of my favourite places for golden-hour portraits when the light begins to soften.

Then there are the beautifully maintained grounds, the new ceremony greenhouse, the elegant bandstand and the famous castle windows.

One of my favourite photographs to create at Cornhill Castle is gorgeous window light shots at the front reception. Those windows create one of the most iconic and timeless images the venue has to offer.

Inside, the sweeping staircase provides another stunning location for portraits, particularly during wetter weather when we want to remain indoors without compromising on beautiful photographs.

No matter what the weather decides to do, Cornhill Castle always offers another incredible location just around the corner.

Sunset Photographs

If there's one piece of advice I always give couples getting married here...

Leave a little time around sunset.

The fields surrounding Cornhill Castle create some of the most beautiful evening light I've seen at any wedding venue in Scotland.

Those final fifteen or twenty minutes before sunset often produce photographs that become favourites for years to come.

If you're happy to sneak away together for a short while, you'll return to your guests with an incredible set of portraits and probably a few moments of peace together during what can otherwise be a wonderfully busy day.

The Food, The Atmosphere & The Team

Every wedding I've photographed at Cornhill Castle has been run incredibly well.

The staff are warm, professional and genuinely invested in making every wedding feel seamless.

As photographers, we often work closely with venue coordinators throughout the day, and the team here always make everything feel organised without ever feeling rushed.

The food is another real highlight.

Guests regularly compliment both the quality of the meals and the service, and it's clear that a huge amount of care goes into every wedding breakfast.

As the evening begins, the atmosphere changes once again.

The dance floor is fantastic, creating a brilliant space for everyone to celebrate together
.

Later in the evening, I also love taking couples into the Champagne room in the Balmoral Honeymoon Suite for a few quieter portraits. The lighting and elegant décor create a completely different feel from the outdoor photographs earlier in the day, adding even more variety to your final gallery.

Things to Consider

Every venue has a few practical things worth thinking about before booking, and Cornhill Castle is no exception.

Location

Cornhill Castle enjoys a wonderfully peaceful countryside setting, but that does mean it's a little further from major cities like Glasgow, Edinburgh and much of Ayrshire.

For many couples, that's actually part of its charm.

However, it's worth considering transport for your guests.

Hiring a coach can be a fantastic option, making the journey easier while allowing everyone to enjoy the celebrations without worrying about driving home afterwards.

Many guests also choose to stay overnight, turning the wedding into a relaxing weekend away rather than just a single day.

Parking

Parking is generally excellent, especially compared to many castle venues.

The only small thing to bear in mind is that if you're hoping for photographs directly outside the castle's beautiful front windows, we sometimes need a few cars moved temporarily to keep the view looking its very best.

It's never a major issue, but it's something I like to plan for in advance.

Evening Restrictions

Like many wedding venues, Cornhill Castle has introduced restrictions around smoke bombs and sparklers.

While they used to be a popular choice for evening photographs, these are no longer permitted.

The good news?

The venue is so visually stunning that there are countless other creative ways to create beautiful evening photographs without them.

My Personal Tip

One suggestion I'd genuinely recommend to couples getting married here is to consider hiring an acoustic singer or live musician for your drinks reception.

While we're away creating your couple portraits, live music keeps guests entertained, creates a wonderful atmosphere and makes the entire drinks reception feel even more memorable.

It's a small addition that can make a surprisingly big difference to the flow of the day.

Is Cornhill Castle Right for You?

If you're looking for a wedding venue that combines elegant interiors, breathtaking countryside views, exceptional food and one of the most experienced wedding teams in Scotland, Cornhill Castle is incredibly difficult to beat.

Every wedding I've photographed here has felt unique, but they've all shared one thing in common—a relaxed atmosphere, beautiful surroundings and couples who genuinely enjoy every minute of their day.

Some of my favourite wedding photographs I've ever taken have been created here, and every visit leaves me inspired to find new ways of telling each couple's story.

If you're planning your wedding at Cornhill Castle and are looking for natural, timeless wedding photography that captures your day exactly as it felt, I'd love to hear all about your plans.
